Pantanereiro and Makala, two male jaguars catalogued by the Jaguar Identification Project, swim and move along the river together—a male coalition, a behaviour only recently documented in a species long considered solitary. Fieldwork with the Jaguar Identification Project, a citizen-science jaguar monitoring NGO founded by Abbie Martin, in the Porto Jofre region of the northern Pantanal, Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil, August 2026. Photographed while accompanying the team—Abbie Martin, biologist Gabriel Piazzeta, volunteer Caro Caillet and boat driver Cigano—cataloguing individual jaguars (Panthera onca) by their unique rosette patterns, based at Panthera's Jofre Velho Conservation Ranch.
